How Long Does Unemployment Last? Weeks by State

Regular unemployment benefits last up to 26 weeks in most states, but some states pay fewer, as few as 12 weeks, and Massachusetts pays up to 30. Your own number of weeks depends on your past wages and the rules of your state.

Frequently asked questions

Can unemployment be extended?

Extended Benefits can add weeks when a state has high unemployment; whether they are active depends on the state and the period.

Is my number of weeks guaranteed?

No. The table shows the maximum; your state sets your own weeks when it reviews your claim and wages.
