What to Bring to a Job Center or Unemployment Office

Bring a photo ID, your Social Security number, and the names, addresses and dates of every employer from the last 18 months. Add bank details if you want direct deposit, a DD-214 if you were in the military, SF-8/SF-50 forms if you worked for the federal government, and immigration papers if you are not a citizen.

For a job search or resume visit

  • A photo ID, to register in the state job system
  • A resume or your work history, even a rough draft
  • A list of jobs you are interested in and any certificates or licenses
  • Your login for the state job portal, if you already have one

For WIOA training eligibility

Staff need to confirm you qualify. Adult services start at age 18 (20 CFR 680.120) and the youth program covers ages 16 to 24 (20 CFR 681.210), so bring proof of age and identity. If you were laid off, bring your layoff notice or separation letter. Veterans should bring a DD-214; you can say you are a veteran at the front desk without proof, but proof is needed to enroll (20 CFR 1010.300).

Center-specific requirements

20 offices publish their own requirements, which appear on their pages. For example:

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment to visit a job center?

It depends on the center. Many take walk-ins for career services but require an appointment for unemployment help. Each office page shows what the official listing says.

What if I do not have my DD-214 or SF-50 yet?

Some states let you send federal or military forms later without delaying your claim (North Carolina says so explicitly). Start the claim and follow the instructions you receive.

Do I need a resume?

Not to register or file for unemployment. Bring one if you want resume or job search help, even a rough draft.
